Daniel Johnson Wins the Inaugural Hutch BSR Pro Late Model Race at Concord Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. – Daniel Johnson claimed the 2009 season opener for the Hutch BSR Pro Late Model Division at Concord Speedway Saturday night during the Pizza Hut Kid’s Night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.  Other winners included Steve Ackerly in the Town and Country Ford Late Models, Adam Welch in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars, Randy McAnulty in the Coca Cola Pure Stocks and Chad Miller in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast and Furious Fours.

Daniel Johnson lead pole winner Roger Lee Newton and the rest of the field across the start finish line, but it was Roger Lee Newton who lead the restart less than a minute later after Cody Brake and Clinton Baker tangled on lap one bringing out the first caution. Fans who came out for the much anticipated series debut of the Hutch BSR Pro Late Model  Series  witnessed a three way battle between Daniel Johnson, Roger Lee Newton and Bobby Measmer, Jr. as they went door-to-door for the top three spots during the 60 lap race.  At the end of the night, it was Daniel Johnson of Concord who emerged from his Checks Cashed Chevrolet in the Capital Bank Victory Lane.  Rounding out the top five were Bobby Measmer, Jr., Roger Lee Newton, Cooper Faassen and Clinton Baker.

Steve Ackerly of Medford, New York took the checkered flag to win his first race of the 2009 season in the Town and Country Ford Late Models division after leading all 40 laps.  Shortly after pole winner Ackerly lead the field to the green, fans watched as Terry Hoggard and Travis McIntyre battled for second, while Bobby Measmer, Jr, Joey Rinehardt, John Thornton and Charles Hutto traded paint and positions in the middle of the pack.  The first caution of the night came out on lap 19 after Charles Hutto spun in turn three.  The race restarted with Hoggard in the lead and McIntyre on his bumper.  Another caution slowed the field on lap 24 after Hoggard and Huneycutt tangled in turn three, and again on lap 25 when Hutto and Huneycutt collided on the same treacherous corner. Ackerly took the checkered flag, with McIntyre, Measmer, Thorton and Miracle rounding out the top five.

Adam Welch took the checkered flag to make it three in a row for the Hinesburg, Vermont native in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Car Division.  Welch may have walked away with the win, but it was Jim Fluharty and Hunter Bledsoe who stole the show, swapping spots and trading paint five times during the 30 lap race.  The teammates finished second and third, with Tony Watcher and Dustin Allman in the fourth and fifth spots.

Randy McAnulty conquered Concord Speedway’s Coca Cola Pure Stock race after he won the pole, drew the first starting spot, and lead all 60 laps, giving him back to back wins to start the 2009 season.  Charles Hutto finished second and David Earnhardt, Jr. took the third spot.  Patty Markin finished fourth, after starting second and never dropping lower than fifth.  The only caution was on lap 43 when Jeff Melton lost a tire sending his car into the turn three wall. Patty Markin and Sean Bonawit completed the top five.

Chad Miller crossed the finish line first, followed by Tracy Mullis, Ben Smith, and Steve Grimes in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast and Furious Fours Division. A late race tangle followed by a postrace bump between Chad Miller and Wayne Harrington almost came to fisticuffs after the intensity on the track carried over to the driver and crews on pit road, enough to earn Miller a one race suspension.
