Mark Reedy wins HutchBSR Pro Late Model 100 at Concord Speedway
CONCORD, N.C. – Mark Reedy of Middletown, Ohio won the Hutch BSR Pro Late Model race Saturday night at Concord Speedway. Other winners include Steve Ackerly of Medford, New York in the Town & Country Ford Late Model Division, Adam Welch of Hinesburg, Vermont in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars, Jeff Melton of Monroe in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks and Ben Smith of Concord in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division.
Mark Reedy won the Hutch BSR Pro Late Model race Saturday night after Roger Lee Newton dominated the 100 lap feature. Newton led the field to the start after turning a qualifying speed of more than 111 mph. He pulled away to a six-car length lead as Cooper Faassen and Reedy battled for second on lap nine. The cars collided as Reedy took second from Faaseen in Turn Three. Roger Lee Newton’s car was on a rail as he pulled away to a twenty-car-length lead from the rest of the field by lap seventeen, while Daniel Johnson passed Reedy for the second position. Johnson pulled away from Reedy and Bobby Measmer, Jr. as he focused on Newton, pulling out to a straightaway-length lead over the third and fourth runners by the half-way point of the race while Newton continued to lap the field. Johnson posted blistering lap times during the second half of the race as he cut into Newton’s lead. On lap seventy-three, Newton lost control of his car in Turn Two, causing Bobby Measmer, Jr. to hit the wall going into Turn Three as he tried to avoid Newton, bringing out the first caution and subsequent red flag of the race. Daniel Johnson led the field across the line at the restart, with Newton in second. Newton jumped out to the lead again as Reedy and Johnson battled fiercely for the second spot, with Reedy getting sideways on two different occasions as they came to the line. Reedy passed Newton for the lead entering Turn Three with seven laps to go, rubbing fenders with the 33 car as he took the position. Reedy claimed his first-ever Pro Late Model victory, followed by Newton in second and Johnson in third.
S
teve Ackerly was victorious in the Town & Country Ford Late Model Division race after fighting off Bobby Cooper for the win. Terry Hoggard lead field to the green, and on the first restart of the race, before Ackerly took the top position on lap six. The first caution flag waived on lap three due to the debris on the track from Larry Hunneycutt’s Chevrolet Impala. Ackerly pulled away to a four car-length lead by lap twenty, dominated the front of the field as Jerry Miracle settled into second and Bobby Cooper in third after battling for those positions the first half of the race. Terry Hoggard, plagued by mechanical problems for most the night, pulled off the track on lap thirty. The second caution of the night waived on lap thirty-six when the 74 car blew a motor, dropping fluid on the track. The field was door-to-door as it crossed the line for the green-white-checkered at the restart. Ackerly shot ahead with Cooper on his bumper, and Cooper tailed him around the track for the remaining two laps. Ackerly took the win, followed by Bobby Cooper in second and Larry Huneycutt in third.
Adam Welch took the checkers for his seventh career victory and fifth win of the 2009 season in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars Division. Darrell Krentz, Executive Director on INEX, led the field to the green flag, but lost the lead to Dustin Allmon on lap one as Krentz fell to the back of the field. Hunter Bledsoe took the lead from Allmon on lap two and pulled away as the field battled bumper to bumper for the rest of the positions. Adam Welch passed Bledsoe on lap eight in Turn Three, but Welch took the lead back on lap twelve. The Thunder Cars of Welch, Bledsoe and Fluharty battled door to door for the top spot, with the 71 and 8 cars side by side until Bledsoe resumed the lead on lap eighteen. The first caution of the race waived on lap twenty after Duke Furr spun in Turn One. Welch took the lead from Bledsoe on lap twenty-one and pulled away as the 8 and 5 battled for second. Fluharty moved to second and challenged Welch for the lead at the line on lap twenty-eight, they made contact in Turn Three as they came to the line for the white flag. Welch won, followed by Fluharty in second and Bledsoe in third.
Jeff Melton won the Coca-Cola Pure Stock Division contest, but not without a fight with Charles Hutto at the line. Brian Thomas briefly jumped out to an early lead as the field took the green for the start of the race, but Randy McAnulty took the position coming out of Turn One. Charles Hutto took the lead going into Turn Three on lap six, after battling side by side with McAnulty for three laps around the half-mile circuit. Defending race winner Jeff Melton took the lead on lap thirty-two from Hutto. John Schaak spun in Turn Three on lap forty bringing out the first caution of the night. McAnulty made a move on Hutto for the second position, taking the spot, but had to give it back when the caution flew for a stopped car in Turn Two before the completion of the lap. Randy McAnulty completed the pass for second in Turn Three on lap forty-three, while Melton pulled away. Brian Thomas passed McAnulty for second on lap fifty, with Hutto moving to third, pushing McAnulty to fourth. Hutto looked to the inside of Thomas for second, getting the advantage at the start/finish line, and completed the pass going into Turn One. Melton was slowed by lapped traffic in Turn Three, allowing the second and third runners to catch him, sending Hutto and Melton side by side for the win. Melton took the checkered flag, with Hutto finishing a close second and Thomas rounded out the top three.
Ben Smith won the caution-free Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division race after starting in the fourth position. Eric Harrington, who started the race in the thirteenth position, was penalized for jumping the start. Jake Simpson took the early lead after leading the field across the start-finish line, but it was Smith who led the field from lap twelve to lap eighteen, when Wayne Harrington took the position. Harrington led the field until he and Simpson tangled out of Turn Three coming to the checkers. Smith claimed the checkers, with Wayne Harrington finishing second and Jake Simpson third.
