Terry Brooks, Jr. claims first 2008 win!

CONCORD, N.C. – Terry Brooks, Jr. of Concord, NC, pilot of the# 23 C W Channel 46 / Carpet Discount Warehouse / Frank Woods Gutters 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, rolled into the Independent Tribune Newspaper Victory Lane Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park and held onto the trophy for his first Town & Country Ford Late Model Stock Car division of the season.  Other winners include: Mike Terry of Charlotte, driving the #23 J R D Earthworks / Truck Service of Charlotte / Maaco Paint & Body / Racing Electronics 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, in the J R D Earthworks Limited Late Model division; Charles Hutto of Monroe in the #1 WIXE 1190 AM / Autotrader.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS in the Coca-Cola Pure Stock division and Chad Johnson of Concord in the #15 Beaver's Honda Salvage "PRIME TIME" Honda Prelude in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours division.

Young Mr. Brooks came into the speedway fully-loaded Saturday for the NASCAR Whelen-All-American Series program after having a win denied the prior week for a fuel violation.  Out to prove his point early, Terry qualified his Chevrolet on the pole for the Late Model Stock car 75-lap feature with a lap-time of 16.534 seconds or 108.867 miles per hour around Concord’s tricky TriOval.  On the start Brooks hugged the inside of Turn One but Frank Hill of Concord in the #45Hill's A/C Auto Chevy took a tenacious hold on the outside line and crossed the stripe a fender-length ahead on lap one.  Brooks slotted into second until lap 10 when he challenged to the inside and lead at the line.  Chuck Crump of Star, NC in the #8 Ford Focus worked by Hill for second on lap 35 and points-leader Kevin Love in the #88 Ford moved to second on lap 37, he half-way point.  At the checkers it was Brooks first, Crump second, Love third, Hill fourth and Larry Benz of Harrisburg finishing fifth in his #4 Monte Carlo.  In victory lane Brooks was very happy.  “We had some complications last week (with the fuel), but we made sure that did NOT happen this week!”  It is truly fun to see a young man appreciate a win the way Mr. Brooks does.

In the J R D Earthworks Limited Late Model 40-lap feature Mike Terry found himself on the pole following the luck of the draw that inverted the top 6 qualifiers.  Jeff Melton, formally of Monroe by now residing in Concord was outside front row in the #6 Chevrolet.  Terry and Melton dueled side by side for the first lap with Terry by a fender at the line. Jay Payne of Thomasville, NC in the #08 Smiley's Barbecue / Cheerwine 2008 Ford Fusion worked by Melton for second on lap 5 and on lap 16 Steve Ackerly in the #66 Town & Country Ford attempted an inside move on Bobby Measmer, Jr. of Concord in the Pirtek Hose & Assemblies / Hughes Motorsports Chevrolet when contact sent Measmer spinning and both cars were relegated to the back of the pack.  At the checkered flag Terry garnered his sixth season victory, Payne was second, third went to Steve Ackerly, who had fought his way back through the field, fourth was Jeff Melton and fifth went to Mike Eplee of Rutherfordton, NC #86 Mann Metal Recycling / Wally Racing Chevrolet.  “One great thing about racing with these guys… you can always count on some clean racing in this division at Concord.” stated Terry in victory Lane.

The award for most exciting finish of the evening went to Charles Hutto and Cooper Faassen in the Coca-Cola Pure Stock 30-lap feature.  Faassen was in the lead on the outside coming to the finish with Hutto on the inside.  Coming onto the straight Hutto used up all the room plus an inch and Faassen’s #11 Wilburn Auto Body Monte Carlo was pinched into the wall. Hutto wound up crossing the line sideways with the #11 t-boned into his right side and as they went sliding by the line, Evan Cupples of Harrisburg was sliding into the melee’ with his #60 Chevy.  Hutto rode to victory lane in the ambulance, his ride coming some minutes later on the hook.  “Charles’ most quotable quote from victory lane kinda summarized the situation… “Man, my car is torn UP! I’ve never pushed anyone into the wall like that.  I hope everything okay (with the #11).”  Second was awarded to Faassen, also from Monroe, third went to Jeff Melton in the #8 Chevy.  Fourth was Clinton baker in the #2 Monte Carlo and fifth went to David Miller of Concord in the # 112 Chevrolet.

The Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious went the 20-lap distance with no cautions despite fielding the most cars of any division.  Chad Johnson of Concord claimed the win in the #15 Beaver's Honda Salvage "PRIME TIME"           Honda Prelude after a spirited battle with Wayne Harrington of Salisbury who finished second in the #3 C & D Salvage "SUPERMAN" Honda. Coming in third was Tracy Mullis of Indian Trail in the #55 “ENFORCER” after fighting his was from last starting spot due to his win last week. Fourth was Chad Miller of Concord in the #88 Honda and Bradley Kimrey of Norwood rounded out the top five in the #99 “WILD THANG” Honda.
