Trevor Bayne wins USAR Pro Cup Concord 250

CONCORD, N.C. – Trevor Bayne of Knoxville, Tennessee claimed the 2009 season opener for the USAR Pro Cup tour at Concord Speedway Saturday Night.  Other winners included Adam Welch of Hinesburg Vermont in the Thunder Cars and Wayne Harrington of Landis, North Carolina in the Fast & Furious Fours.

The race looked like the property of Clay Rogers of nearby Mooresville for much of the race.  Rogers, piloting the #54s C & C Boiler Sales and Service Chevrolet led the first 110 laps until caution came out on lap 111 as a competitor went for a spin in Turn 1.

The competition rules required every contestant to stop to change two tires and fuel at some point during the race, but not simultaneously.  Rogers pitted under the caution for tires and later for fuel, which put him in the pack to be collected up on lap 118 in a multi-car accident.  Repairs and a black flag for tire rub put Rogers 6 laps down and for all intents and purposes, ended his challenge.

Bayne was able to secure the lead from Brandon Ward on lap 210 after a spirited battle and led to the checkers.  Ward held on to second through a heavy challenge by Derek Kale who claimed third.  Concord’s Bobby Gill was fourth and Drew Herring crossed the line fifth.

The opening gambit of the racing evening was a 5:15 start for the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars.  Adam Welch claimed his second victory in as many events with Hunter Bledsoe from Saluda, South Carolina crossing in second, Mike Sondles of Charleston, South Carolina third, Jim Fluharty of Concord fourth and Dustin Allman of Mount Pleasant fifth.

The Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours feature was claimed by Wayne Harrington of Landis.  Tracy Mullis of Indian Trail claimed second, Barry Canter of Charlotte third, Chad Miller of Concord fourth and Steve Grimes fifth.
